Rule of the Week - Exceeding the 1min Timeout Guideline

July 27, 2024 1:26 AM

by San Diego APA

Situation: My opponent while it is their turn at the table takes a timeout. The coach talks with the player then leaves the playing area and comes back to continue talking. Is this a second timeout?

No, during the 1 min timeout the coach can step away for many reasons and then go back to the player to continue the timeout as long as they don't exceed the 1 minute time guidelines. If they do exceed the time limit this is a sportsmanship violation but not ball in hand or are they charged a second timeout.

Rule: Official Team Manual (OTM) page 8 “Time Guidelines”: https://media.poolplayers.com/TMRB/Team-Manual-English.pdf

Although referred to as "Time Guidelines" teams should honor these as they are in place to ensure the league night ends at a reasonable time. Failure to respect these guidelines as stated above can be considered sportsmanship violations and result in further action.
