Captains Log, December 14th, 2020

It’s been a really long time between newsletters. We apologize for that, but there just really hasn’t been a whole lot to discuss. This pandemic has affected all of us in different ways. We know that APA was your social outlet each week that combined hanging out with your friends, supporting the local watering hole and friendly competition on the pool tables. Maybe this talk about a vaccine will allow us to get back to the tables before March 16th, which will be one year since the shutdown of San Diego APA. Sadly, we could no longer afford to keep Lindsay on payroll. She’s found a new job and we wish nothing but the best for her future. Lindsay gave us 15+ great years as the San Diego APA Office Manager and she performed her job masterfully. We thank her for her dedication to our pool league. She’s still on a team, so she isn’t going away entirely.

All of the tournaments that were scheduled to take place in 2020 are bumped to 2021. We have not changed anything as far as how we will start back up. Once we get the green light, we plan on continuing with the Spring ’20 Session, which still had 6 weeks of regular session play and two weeks of playoffs. That could change depending on when we start back up, but the goal is to stay on this plan. Our Doubles Divisions awkwardly finished with just a single week of playoffs remaining to determine the playoff champions. Once we do start back up, we will try to delay that playoff match a bit so that people can get back into playing shape. As soon as California allows indoor public gatherings, we will be aggressive with getting started back up. Our locations will expect that from us, and I’m sure all of our league members will want that as well.

We still have Captains tournament entry fees and the Captains tournament signup sheet. We haven’t forgotten about you. We still have the list of signups for the Doubles Championship events . Masters still has 4 weeks remaining . Juniors still has 5 weeks remaining in their session. Ladies also needs four more weeks of play to finish their Spring Session. The good news for carrying these particular events over to 2021 is it looks like we may be getting extra slots into the Championship events for 2021. I currently show that we will have 2 8 Ball Doubles Championship slots, 2 9 Ball Doubles Championship slots, 5 Ladies 8 Ball Championship slots and 5 Masters Championship slots. These extra slots will have to be fully funded by the teams that qualify since we didn’t generate any money during this year to help support these events.

If you go to the site , you can see that the schedules keep getting advanced as the shutdown continues. We’ve pushed everything to at least the beginning of January, but will continue being bumped until we get an official start date. We know that many teams have lost teammates in many different ways, and we will address making changes to your rosters upon our return. We recognize that it’s not realistic to continue on as if nothing happened. Things do change that are out of our control and APA is willing to work with us to help transition to starting back up. With that in mind, there will probably need to be a membership drive for new people to fill rosters of teams that will have lost teammates. Between players moving away, death, jobs changing and some league members that won’t want to risk being out in public even after the pandemic is over, there will be a need to make roster adjustments. Even qualified teams should be able to get assistance on roster changes.

Membership fee renewal has already started happening. Everyone becomes due on January 1st of each new year. If you have moved or changed phone numbers, it would be a good idea to update your info on our web site. You can also call or email and have us update your information if you prefer doing it that way.

Please take an opportunity to support the locations that support the San Diego APA. They are struggling mightily out there. A few of them have gone away permanently, like Effin’s Pub and the Ambassador Lounge. We are sorry to see them go away. Even when we start back up, they will be needing all of the help they can get. Many of our locations are available for takeout and outside dining (when allowed). If you can afford to help them out, I’m sure they would appreciate it.

We are hanging in there the best we can. We are definitely getting stir crazy, but making due with the situation. Thanks to everyone that has reached out to check up on us. We appreciate it.

We sadly announce the passing of Michael “Cornbred” Yuresek. Cornbred joined our league in Escondido only two years before the coronavirus shutdown, but in that timeframe, he became an influential part of our league. He became a captain, participated in tournaments and he was qualified to compete in the Regionals in our Singles Program. In such a short time with APA, he was immediately respected throughout San Diego County. Cornbred played on a Sunday 9 Ball team and a Tuesday 8 Ball team. He was a skill level 5 in both formats, and played 99 eight ball matches and 37 nine ball matches. “Cornbred” was only 29. Our sincerest condolences to all of his friends and family. RIP Michael!

The league office also recently learned of the passing of Andy and Neicy Rowley’s son, Jaden, age 22. Andy and Neicy are both former APA members from the North County Coastal area. Our sincere condolences to Andy and Neicy and their friends and family. RIP Jaden!

We hope you all enjoy the holidays. We are very anxious to be done with 2020 and see what 2021 has in store for us. Please stay safe and wear your masks to keep everyone around you safe! It’s been a very bad year for deaths in the San Diego APA, and we’d like to keep the rest of you around a bit longer.

Captains Log August 25 - Covid Update
8/25/20 - 8:53 pm
Captains Log, August 25, 2020 Hello everyone! There isn’t really much new to report. We are still in a holding pattern. Many of our locations can’t be open (those that don’t serve food) and those that can be open cannot use the pool tables. Organized gatherings that bring together people from different households are still prohibited, so that means leagues and tournaments also may not take place a
League Activity Continues To Be Postponed Indefinitely
7/3/20 - 8:36 pm
LEAGUE PLAY INFORMATION: The County of San Diego published a new Health Order this week which once again prohibits gatherings of people from different households and specifically restricts the use of pool tables. Therefore, we must continue to delay the resumption of League activity indefinitely. As we have been doing all along, we have again updated the schedules to skip the next two weeks. This

Captains Log, June 24th, 2020 We hope everyone is staying safe and doing their part to help end this pandemic. We hope to be back up and running soon. If we do get the go ahead soon, we will have some tournaments that will have to be scheduled immediately to meet the entry deadlines for the August Las Vegas APA Showdown Series Championships, assuming that they do go on as scheduled. If APA does in
