Captains Log August 25 - Covid Update

Captains Log, August 25, 2020

Hello everyone! There isn’t really much new to report. We are still in a holding pattern. Many of our locations can’t be open (those that don’t serve food) and those that can be open cannot use the pool tables. Organized gatherings that bring together people from different households are still prohibited, so that means leagues and tournaments also may not take place at this time.
Click here to read the San Diego County Health Order.
APA still has the 2020 APA World Pool Championships scheduled for the end of November/beginning of December, but each passing day that many leagues are not up and running hinders the chances that this event will be able to take place. As soon as there are any new announcements regarding league play or tournaments, we will pass it along. For now, we do still plan on finishing up the Spring Session and conducting our end of session tournaments and qualifiers. But we can’t schedule anything until we have a date to restart. Many leagues across the country have started back up, but some had to shut back down again as the coronavirus has spiked in their markets.
The October APA 9 Ball Southwest Challenge has officially been canceled. This event will not be rescheduled. The next Southwest Challenge event is scheduled for March 11-14, 2021. This event will be the annual 8 Ball event. The March 2020 Southwest Challenge event had to be canceled this year, also.
Every two weeks, we update the schedules. If you notice that your schedule has been updated, please note that it is likely just to advance the schedule to a new date in the future. We will make announcements when we can restart.
We sadly announce the recent passing of several APA members:
Jeff Bender joined the San Diego APA in 2014 and quickly got to experience the joys of competing in the APA World Pool Championships, making it on a team in 2015 in 8 Ball, and twice more in 2016 and 2017 on a 9 Ball team. Jeff played out of Five Points in Escondido and was loved by all of his teammates as he was quite the team player. He amassed 270 APA league matches in his career as a skill level 4 in both 8 Ball and 9 Ball. Our sincerest condolences to all of his friends and family. RIP Jeff!
Dana Staring played APA 8 Ball on Thursday nights out of the Stagecoach Inn in Vista. He was on Gary Stodghill’s team “One Shot At A Time.” Dana joined our league in the Summer of 2015 and he played 8 Ball and some 9 Ball over the years. He accumulated 48 matches in his time in the league and was having an MVP caliber season in the Spring. He didn’t ever get to try his luck as a skill level 4 as the coronavirus shut down the league in March before he got a chance to play at his new skill level. Our sincerest condolences to all of his friends and family. RIP Dana!
Players from the Bullpen in I.B. are mourning the recent loss of a favorite bartender, Bobby Arthur Duensing. Our thoughts are with his family, the staff at Bullpen and all the customers and APA members who will miss him. RIP Bobby!
Players from the Library in Allied Gardens are mourning the loss of Kendall Brown, Dove Pena and Sean Dowdy.
Kendall was an APA member from 2002 – 2011 and played nearly 250 9-Ball matches. Kendall played at Players in addition to The Library and was known for his happy demeanor and infectious smile. He worked for a beer distributor and was widely known in the San Diego bar community. He will be dearly missed by all.
Dove joined the APA in 2011 and played mostly out of The Library in San Diego, but also played at Paradise Lounge & Grill, Alibi and Pal Joey’s. She had recently taken some time off of league, but before that had played nearly 250 APA matches. Dove occasionally worked as a bartender at a few different San Diego locations and will be remembered by loved ones and all who knew her as a very outgoing, funny and sweet person who wore her heart on her sleeve.
Sean played 8-Ball on Tony Pallone’s crazy Wednesday night team from 2013 – 2016, racking up over 75 matches as a member of the APA. Sean lived life to its fullest and will be missed by many. We send our deepest sympathies to all of Kendall, Dove and Sean’s friends and family. RIP Kendall, Dove and Sean!
We certainly hope you are staying safe out there. We are all doing fine in the league office.
We have the ability to refund any team captain that was carrying a credit with the league office if money ever gets tight for you.
Our sincerest thanks to those of you that have reached out to us during this shut down. We are doing fine here and have actually found lots of things to do to keep busy. We will be instituting our newest credit card payment program when we return. It will be through Stripe. We’ve already had one person successfully pay their fees using that program, so it seems ready to kick off when we return. Sometime toward the end of the Spring Session, we will start testing the new online scoring program with a couple of our divisions with the hopes of having it working for everyone when we start the next session.

Captains Log December 14th 2020
12/14/20 - 5:41 pm
Captains Log, December 14th, 2020 It’s been a really long time between newsletters. We apologize for that, but there just really hasn’t been a whole lot to discuss. This pandemic has affected all of us in different ways. We know that APA was your social outlet each week that combined hanging out with your friends, supporting the local watering hole and friendly competition on the pool tables. Mayb
League Activity Continues To Be Postponed Indefinitely

LEAGUE PLAY INFORMATION: The County of San Diego published a new Health Order this week which once again prohibits gatherings of people from different households and specifically restricts the use of pool tables. Therefore, we must continue to delay the resumption of League activity indefinitely. As we have been doing all along, we have again updated the schedules to skip the next two weeks. This

Captains Log, June 24th, 2020 We hope everyone is staying safe and doing their part to help end this pandemic. We hope to be back up and running soon. If we do get the go ahead soon, we will have some tournaments that will have to be scheduled immediately to meet the entry deadlines for the August Las Vegas APA Showdown Series Championships, assuming that they do go on as scheduled. If APA does in
