5 Players Present - Rule of the Week

July 17, 2025 6:25 PM

by San Diego APA

Situation: The team we are playing tonight has 4 players available, while their 5th player is at the same location but playing for a different team (in a *different division). The opposing team has requested either a double post or a makeup match (our choice).

Although only 4 players are actively with their team, the 5th player is present at the location and is eligible under the 23-Rule. Per APA bylaws (page 6-7), the following applies:

“If you have five (5) players present that can meet the 23-Rule, you must play those five (5) players and cannot double post.”

Since all five players are present and can meet the 23-Rule, the team is required to play them and is not eligible for a double post or makeup match.

If the 5th player chooses not to play for both teams, that is a personal decision. However, the team is still considered to have five eligible players present. In this case, the team that is ready to play can take a forfeit.

Rule: Bylaws page 6-7 "Double Posting (A.k.a. "Replay Rule")": https://apa-by-laws.s3.amazonaws.com/prod/921_bylaws_2025.pdf

*A player can play on two teams on the same night in different divisions. The only exception is someone who is the captain of the team cannot play on another team on the same night.

This section also covers:

  • Who decided double post or makeup match
  • Who picks who plays the double post
  • How many double posts can occur in a night

You can submit a "Rule of the Week" to the league office:

  • Email to sandiego@apaleagues.com.
  • Email Subject Line must read “SDAPA Rule of the Week”
  • Clearly state the rule/situation and if you know where the answer is found please provide those details.
