Captains Log, September 5th, 2021

This is the 4th week of play for the Spring Session. Everyone needs to be paid up in membership or will be removed from the roster. There are no players allowed to be on rosters without being paid members. If you add someone new to your team, be sure they pay their membership fees, because the team is responsible for anyone added after week 4 that doesn’t submit their membership fees.

As a reminder, in order to receive your bonus points each week, you must submit your score sheet and fees on time , the score sheets must be legible and completely filled out, which includes totaling up all of the innings, writing in the correct membership numbers for each player competing in each match and totaling up all of the points for the match. 9 Ball teams can receive 10 bonus points each week and 8 Ball teams can receive 2 bonus points each week.

We will be starting up our Ladies 8 Ball Divisions on September 10th. The every other Friday format is a fun night out with your favorite ladies. We have a travel division and an in house Break Room division. If you are interested in starting a team, please contact us soon. Ladies are 3-5 person teams and 3 play in each match. It plays just like the 8 Ball Open divisions and the points score the same. Teams compete for end of session prize money and chances to qualify for the Ladies 8 Ball Championships in Las Vegas. Handicap limit per Ladies match is 13.

We are also starting up our 8 Ball and 9 Ball Doubles Divisions. The Doubles divisions play on alternating Saturdays. The 8 Ball Doubles Division begins on September 11th and the 9 Ball Doubles Division begins on September 18th. Doubles is 3 person teams with a handicap limit of 10 per team for the Doubles match. Doubles also features two singles matches and the two combined matches also cannot have a handicap above 10 unless it’s during the session and someone went up. Points are the same as Open 8 Ball division and 9 Ball Open Division, and the doubles match is double points based on how your team performed in the Doubles match. So if the final score was a 12-8 win for your team in the doubles match, the score of the Doubles match would double to a 24-16 score. The points tally up in all 3 matches for your total points for the week. We do team qualifications for the Doubles Championships through these Doubles Divisions. Doubles plays at 3pm. Team fees are $30.00 per team. A team can play a handicap limit of 11 in our Doubles league provided that the team started as a handicap limit of 10 when the session started. We do not allow a handicap of 12 during our session at any time, unless it’s within the last four weeks of the session, and the only time you can play a handicap of 12 is if that’s the only line up you can field.

Masters is starting up on Saturday, September 11th. Masters is a non-handicapped format that features some of the best APA players from all over the county competing in a combination of 8 Ball and 9 Ball. Teams consist of 3-5 players and 3 play each week. Matches are a combination of five 8 Ball games and eight 9 Ball games and the match plays until someone reaches 7 wins in their match. Masters is set to start at 5pm, but teams generally try to get together and play earlier in the day. We provide phone number lists for each team to coordinate earlier matches. Masters is an every other Saturday division and team fees are $30 per match. Teams compete for the chance to win session ending prize money and qualify for the Masters Championships in Las Vegas. All Masters division’s are travel, so pick your location to call home and submit your roster to the league office to get your team in the next session!

Our Junior division is growing like crazy. The new Junior division begins September 18th. All Junior division play takes place at Pockets Billiards and Brew. The Junior division is open to kids between the ages of 7 and 18. We are hoping to be able to make it where every kid that signs up has a team they can play on, but we will start a waiting list once all of the teams fill up.

Congratulations to the five 8 Ball teams that will be representing the San Diego APA in the 2020/2021 APA World Pool Championships . Those 5 teams are:

2 Gods and 3 Hail Mary’s- (The Library Tavern)- Captain Brandon Gramse, Christie Sanders, Brian Chamberlin, Bobbi Adams, Joan Reynolds, Margie Olszewski, Scott Sanders and Storm Gramse

The teams that won a trip to compete in the October APA World Pool Championships will have rooms at the Westgate, travel assistance money, entry fees paid to compete in the event, and also trophies and the tournament board for keepsakes.

There are rooms at some nearby hotels that will be offering an APA discount during the APA World Pool Championships. The rates are pretty good except on the weekends because of the NFL, most likely. You can find the rates and the group code on APA’s web site www.poolplayers.com

Our sincerest appreciation goes out to everyone that helped make these tournaments flow smoothly. Big thanks to Rob Elliot, Josh Watson, Ashi Fachler and Jake Hardwick for being amazing refs during these events. Thanks to Pockets Billiards and Brew for hosting our event and doing everything they could to make sure we had a safe event for all of the teams competing. And a huge thank you to the teams and players that toughed out having to wear a mask for as long as you did this weekend. We know it wasn’t easy, and hopefully we helped prevent anyone from getting sick.

That was the last tournament for Jill and me. We have another month or so of running the leagues and then Scot and Liza will transition as the new League Operators around September 28th. Lindsay is currently projected to stay on with the new League Operators, so that should help make this a smooth transition.

Our sincerest condolences to the friends, family and teammates of Stephanie Boulette. Sadly, she has passed away at the young age of 47. She was known as quite a bundle of energy. A fierce competitor on the pool tables and made friends with league members all over the county. She first joined our league in 2013 and she played all over the county, but mostly out of Stagecoach in Vista, Five Points in Escondido and Hungry Stick, Break Room and O Billiard Café’ in the Kearny Mesa area. She also regularly competed in the Southwest Challenge. Stephanie had just recently qualified to compete in the 2020/2021 APA World Pool Championships this October with her team “The Magician Shooters”. She had previously made it to Nationals with her Ladies 8 Ball team “Oceanside Crazy Divas in 2016 and an 8 Ball team in 2014. She had just reached her 500th match in the APA and unfortunately we weren’t able to get her award to her this past weekend. RIP Stephanie!
