Captains Log, July 19, 2021

This is the final week of our 1 year and 4 month long Spring Session 2020. Next week is playoffs. We will be skipping the Summer and Fall 2020 and Spring and Summer 2021 Sessions and going right into the Fall 2021 session which will begin the week of August 15th. The Fall 2021 Session will be the first session for the new SDAPA League Operators, Liza Gazmen and Scot Burnell. Some of you already know Liza and Scot, as they are currently the League Operators for the South Orange County APA. They will be taking over at the end of September. They will be at the Blast tournament to meet everyone. They have a busy schedule in having someone take over the South Orange County APA and selling their house and finding a place to live in San Diego so they can be closer to you all. We weren’t going to just hand this league over to anyone, and we have a ton of respect for Liza and Scot and the work they have done with their league over the last 14 years and we feel they can maintain the level of professionalism and care that we have always tried to deliver to you over the last 25 years. Not only have they been LO’s for the last 14 years, but they were APA members in the Orange County APA for many years before becoming LO’s, so they have the same player perspective as we do when it comes to administering the league, which is the players come first when it comes to decisions that benefit the league. We believe you will like them a lot! We were going to wait to make the announcement, but the rumor mill has been working overtime and it was time to squash all of the rumors and guessing that has been taking place lately.

Next week is the start of playoffs. Every team still has a chance to make playoffs, so be sure to be caught up on your league fees as you can’t have a past due or more than 5 forfeits for the session to be eligible for the wild card draw. Every playoff has a wild card team, which is any team that didn’t make playoffs and is in good standing with the league office. Divisions with 4 teams playoff with 1st having a first week bye, 2nd plays the wild card. Divisions with 5 teams is 1st vs. wild card and 2nd vs. 3rd. Divisions with 6 to 11 teams is 1st place team goes directly to the Blast and 2nd plays wild card and 3rd plays 4th. Divisions with 12 or more teams have a double playoff. 1st place goes directly to the Blast, playoff #1 is 2nd vs. wild card #1 and 4th vs. 6th. Playoff #2 is 3rd vs. wild card and 5th vs. 7th. The winning teams in week 1 of playoffs play again in week 2. The team with the highest seed hosts each playoff match for each week of playoffs. Playoff champions will go to the Blast . See the San Diego APA bylaws for all details regarding the playoffs. We will have a playoff captains log next week for the first round.

Playoff fees are $40 instead of $50. You will not be able to use Stripe to pay the reduced rate playoff fees. The league office will send you an invoice for your playoff matches via email to the person that normally pays your league fees. With that invoice, you can pay your playoff fees with a credit or debit card as usual using a link provided in the email.

To be eligible for playoffs, you must have 4 matches played with your team during the Spring ’20 session. To be eligible for the Blast, you must have at least 6 lifetime matches in the format you are competing in and 4 matches with the team for the Spring ’20 session. Playoff matches do count to get those 6 lifetime. To be eligible for the City Championships , you must have 10 lifetime matches in the format you are competing in and at least 4 matches with the team for the Spring ’20 session. Your Spring roster at the end of the session is your Blast and City Championship roster.

The Blast takes place August 14-15. August 14th is the 8 Ball Blast and August 15th is the 9 Ball Blast. Win one match at the Blast and you will be qualified to compete in the City Championships . The 9 Ball City Championships take place August 21-22 and the 8 Ball City Championships take place August 28-29.

We will not start calculating who won MVP’s in each division until all divisions have finished for the regular Spring Session. Please do not call and ask about MVP winners until we have posted the results. Results will be posted to the MVP page on sandiego.apaleagues.com

8 Ball Break, 8 Ball Break and Run, 9 Ball Snap, 9 Ball Break and Run and Grand Slam patches for the Spring ’20 session can be picked up at the Blast or City Championships. Anyone on the team can pick up patches for the entire team. We will also have MVP trophies, Perfect Session trophies and the two previous session MVP trophies. Please, please, please come and pick up your teammates’ MVP trophies. They also receive an MVP patch and $30 in Singles Board vouchers with their trophy. A lot of these get left behind because no one picks them up for their players.

The Blast and 2 City Championship weekends will be our last tournaments before we leave the San Diego APA. We hope that even if your team doesn’t make it to the Blast or City Championships, you come by to see us before we go. It has been an amazing journey and we are very proud of what the San Diego APA has become and we believe that Liza and Scot will carry on that tradition of being one of the best APA leagues in the country. We will be around until the end of September. I (Brian) will be working the APA World Pool Championships in October, so that will be our final hurrah as League Operators. There will be mini tournaments going on during the entirety of the Poolplayer Championships , but you will need to be paid up in 2021 membership fees, have a printed or digital copy of your membership card and have a minimum of 20 scores in one of the formats within the last 4 years to be eligible to participate in mini tournaments. You will not be able to pay membership fees during this event and participate. They will need to be paid in advance. The full dates for Minis will be August 5-14.

The Fall Session begins the week of August 15th. We hope to see your team back and ready to try to qualify for the 2022 APA World Pool Championships.
