Masters Log, July 17, 2021

This is the final week of the Spring Session. While it does show that there is a playoff week, we will not be playing that playoff week, since the playoff week was supposed to be used to determine what teams advanced to the City Championships, and we have already concluded the City Championships for this year.

Congratulations to the 5 teams advancing to the Masters Championships at the APA Poolplayer Championships at the Westgate Resort and Casino in August. They are:

Hurricanes (Paul Langley, John Pasquarella, Shaun Murphy, Dave Pino), Tropical Storm (Larry Carr, Tom Sheehan, Scott Miller, Blake Kamiab), Asian Shooters (Vladimir Moresca, Marvin Ungco, Rolando Roxas, Tommy Woodland) Talk Is Cheap (Cody Mattingly, Josh Watson, Luis Abarca, Edward Arciniega), On Cues Finest (Nayan Tamrakar, Derrick Hilliard, Angel Dixon, Star Iuli). Masters Championship dates are August 10th through the 14th.

Mini tournament rules during the APA Poolplayer Championships are that you need to be paid up in 2021 membership fees , must have a paper or digital copy of your membership card, must have a minimum of 20 scores in either 8 Ball or 9 Ball in the last 4 years, or if you only play Masters you must have at least 20 masters matches or a combination of 20 scores between masters, 8 Ball and 9 Ball within the last 4 years. If you don’t have 20 masters scores, but do have 20 in the combined 3 formats, you will be required to play minis as a 7/9. This is per the APA rules regarding Minis. Membership fees must be paid before the event starts to be eligible to compete in Minis.

Once the session is complete, we will mail out checks for prize money based on order of finish in the standings. The next session begins September 4th.

We thank you for participating in the Masters division. We would like to congratulate the Hurricanes for making it to the APA Masters Championship for the 21st year in a row. They won the Masters Championship event in 2002. The roster has changed a bit over the years, but John Pasquarella has been the one consistent player every year of the event. He made it to the 8 Ball Classic and 9 Ball Shootout this year as well, so good luck to LJ in all three events this year.

If you missed the announcement, Jill and I will be passing the torch on to some new League Operators at the end of September. We are moving to Illinois to be closer to my mom and dad while they deal with health issues. It has been an absolute pleasure to be your League Operators for the last 25 years. We have enjoyed our time with all of you, well maybe not all of our time with Shaun Murphy (just kidding, just kidding), and we will miss you all. As I look over the Masters rosters, there are many of you that have sacrificed watching some bad pool on regular 8 Ball and 9 Ball league nights over playing in tournaments around the county. The coaching you have done to teach your teammates to be better players and the dedication to APA over the years makes you someone we appreciate and respect from the bottom of our hearts. The new League Operators are going to be Liza Gazmen and Scot Burnell. They have been the APA League Operators of the South Orange County APA for the last 14 years and will bring their valuable experience and professionalism to San Diego. We hope you welcome them with open arms. I’ve known Liza for nearly the entire 25 years I’ve been in San Diego as she was an APA member in Orange County competing in events with some of our players. Scot was also an APA member before marrying Liza and becoming APA LO’s. We couldn’t just hand this league over to anybody. It was important that they be knowledgeable and professional and that they continue to keep San Diego APA as one of the best damn leagues in the country. We know they will do a great job with the league. We won’t be complete strangers. Jill has two sons that live here in San Diego and we will be back to visit a lot, and heck, maybe even after we experience the first snow this winter. Brrrrrr!

We will be around to start the new session, so make sure you register your team for this next session, which begins Sept. 4!
