Reports of a massive data breach are emerging regarding social media sites for Apple, Google, Facebook, Telegram, and more . It appears that some nasty malware has collected something like 16 billion (yes, billion, with a "B") usernames and passwords. The exact scope of this leak is not fully understood, but we're being told to assume that your login information to every major platform you use has been siphoned off in this data leak. And we're not talking about an old data leak; this one seems pretty fresh.
If you want to be as safe as possible, I recommend that you invest some time in changing your passwords for ALL major platforms. If you're not already doing so, it's also a good time to start using a password manager, turn on two-factor authentication, and let your password manager generate complex passwords.
If you're feeling the urge to ask me if you should change your password to "insert site/app here," I suggest you just go ahead and do it. It's unclear exactly where this leak originated, but from the short glimpses researchers got into it before the perpetrators locked it down, it's clear that it is incredibly wide-reaching. I suspect it'll be some time before anyone figures out where it's leaking from and how to stop it, so don't be surprised if it's recommended that we all change passwords again in the coming days or weeks.
