Crazy 8’s: A Fun and Fast-Paced Pool Game
Crazy 8’s is an exciting and dynamic pool game that combines elements from both 8-ball and 9-ball. As John Guffey humorously put it, “It’s like 8 Ball & 9 Ball got together and had a baby!” This game offers a thrilling experience for those looking to try something new on the pool table.
Basic Rules of Crazy 8’s
Crazy 8’s is played with a total of 9 balls, consisting of 4 solids numbered 1-4 and 4 stripes numbered 9-12 along with the 8 ball. The game offers a unique blend of both 8-ball and 9-ball characteristics, making it a high-energy and strategic game.
Setting Up the Game
- Rack Formation: The balls are racked in a diamond shape similar to 9-ball. The 1-ball is placed at the front of the rack.
- Unique Placement: Unlike the typical 9-ball game where the 9-ball is positioned in the center, Crazy 8’s places the 8-ball in the middle of the rack.
Game Objective
Crazy 8’s is a high/low game akin to 8-ball, but with a twist: players must pocket the balls in numerical order, similar to 9-ball.
Special Rules
- Winning on the Break: If a player pockets the 8-ball on the break, they automatically win the game.
- Calling/Marking the Pocket: Players must mark the pocket when attempting to sink the 8-ball. However, the 8-ball cannot be pocketed through combination shots before it is the last ball remaining of the teams category.
Playing the Game
- Lagging: Teams will lag for the break
- Breaking: The game begins with a break shot. If the 8-ball is pocketed on the break, it's an immediate win.
- Turns and Shots: Players take turns attempting to pocket the balls in order, starting from the lowest number.
- Calling Shots: When shooting for the 8-ball, players must mark the intended pocket to legally win the game.
- Fouls: Standard fouls apply, such as scratching the cue ball or failing to hit the lowest numbered ball first.
