Double Jeopardy 5th Match - Rule of the Week

by San Diego APA

Situation: A team only has five players for the night, meeting the 23-rule, but one player is currently playing in match four of 9-Ball and is also needed as the fifth player in 8-Ball. The fifth 8-Ball match is ready to start, but the player is still finishing their 9-Ball match. What happens?

This is the one condition in which that fifth 8-Ball match would be held up for the player to complete their fourth 9-Ball match before playing. Because rosters in Double Jeopardy are mostly common across both formats, the team will not be penalized in this specific scenario. However, teams should keep several best practices in mind.

Teams should actively try to avoid this situation whenever possible by communicating with the opposing team early on to arrange match orders that prevent overlaps if willing.

Additionally, if a player arriving late creates this specific issue, the opposing team may file a sportsmanship complaint. The spirit of the rule assumes teams have the opportunity to plan ahead and avoid delays, but late arrivals restrict those options.

To keep things moving, teams can also play the fifth 9-Ball match on the open 8-Ball table while waiting, though this may not be an option if both fifth matches are blocked at the same time.

If that same player ends up scheduled for the fifth match in both 8-Ball and 9-Ball simultaneously, often because earlier provisions weren't taken to avoid it, the rule permitting a wait still applies; however, because no other matches remain to keep the tables moving, teams should strongly consider working together to schedule a makeup match instead.

Ultimately, clear communication with both your own players and the opposing team will help avoid or alleviate most of these circumstances. Teams that consistently find themselves in this situation may be flagged for sportsmanship concerns, so making proactive efforts to avoid these overlaps should always be the primary goal.
