Masters Log, September 11th, 2021

Welcome back to the Fall Session Masters Division. We have combined the teams into one big division this session since we are under 16 teams for the time being. If we do add more teams and it puts us over 16, we will need to split the divisions up again. Our software doesn’t allow more than 16 teams in a division. We also may adjust the total weeks to make sure every team plays each other once when we have a confirmation of how many teams will be participating this session. I will supply a phone number list for your next match so that you can work out times for your matches each week. While the league start time is 5:00pm, many teams do prefer to get their match done earlier in the day if possible. We do appreciate that you are all working together on these times and that it has never been a problem. If there is a dispute, the start time will be 5:00pm.

Weekly fees are $30 per team and the schedule is alternating Saturdays. We are stopping this schedule somewhere close to the middle of March, because we don’t yet know if APA plans to schedule Masters Championships in Las Vegas in late April/early May during the APA Poolplayer Championships or during the World Pool Championships in August. We are guessing that it will be in August, but schedules for next year aren’t posted yet. We assume it will be August, but if it is in late April, we want to be finished up beforehand so that we can qualify teams for that event.

For any new teams, Masters is 3 to 5 person teams (only 4 on a team for the Las Vegas event) and 3 play each match. Matches are 5 games of 8 ball and 8 games of 9 Ball and players race to 7 games. Each game won is a point for your team. Each team flips a coin to see who puts up first, and then players lag to see who breaks. Winner of the lag has the choice of breaking or choosing the game you start with. If you choose 8 Ball, you play all five 8 Ball games and then move to 9 Ball. If you choose 9 Ball, you play all 8 games of 9 Ball before moving on to 8 Ball. In 9 Ball, it is not points but whoever makes the 9 ball. There are no timeouts. APA does allow jump cues for Masters divisions only, but house rules do overrule APA rules in regards to jumping. In other words, if the host location you are competing in doesn’t allow jumping, you aren’t allowed to do it. Normal APA rules apply for 8 Ball and 9 Ball outside of the handicapped point scoring for 9 Ball. For reasons I don’t totally understand, skill levels do not print on Masters score sheets, so just assume your opponent is the best player in San Diego County when you get matched up with them. J

Double check the schedule each week, especially the first weeks of a new session. Because these sessions run so long, we do our best to allow teams that join late to be a part of the league.

We will be passing the league over to Liza Gazmen and Scot Burnell on October 5th. I would imagine they will continue providing you with newsletters, and you will most likely receive some sort of notification of new email addresses, league office phone numbers, payment processes and such. The goal is to transfer as much of that over to Liza and Scot as possible. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all of you. It’s been an amazing 25 years of being League Operators for the San Diego APA. It is truly an amazing organization that we hope we can continue having some sort of relationship with going forward, but we most likely won’t be running leagues any more. 25 years is long enough. We couldn’t have asked for a better group of poolplayers to manage. So many of you dedicate a lot of your precious time to not only playing on teams, but being there on nights you don’t plan on playing in order to coach your teammates. And you all display great sportsmanship and integrity that your lower skilled teammates learn from and incorporate into their own behaviors. We will truly miss you all. We hope to see you on a team in Las Vegas or maybe we will stop in and see some of you on league night when we are back in town.

As the transfer takes place, the current plan is for Lindsay to stay on with the new League Operators, so each of the email addresses should continue working for now, but after October 5th, you may want to reach out to her for any league business.
