After several discussions with the National office, MVAPA has been granted the authority to continue running TWO WEEKS of playoffs. All other changes to the playoff structure will remain as announced previously and you are able to review those in our bylaws.
Our biggest concern in reverting to one week of playoffs was the increase in the number of teams who would qualify for Tri Annuals and what that would mean to the tournament structure, dates etc…as well as the burden the larger tournament would be on our current venue, Summit Lanes. And then there is the “trickle down” effect that it has on WQs. The increase in Tri Annual teams would mean an increase in WQ teams and therefore, would change the established structure of that tournament as well.
As it is, we qualify 45-50 teams, in 8 ball, for the tri annuals at the end of each session. The change is playoff structure, coupled with removing one week of playoffs would increase that number to over 70 teams. We would either have to change the established structure of the tri annuals, add additional dates or the days would become extremely lengthy…none of which is something we care to do. And exploring the “trickle down” effect that we mentioned, our current field of 35-40 8 ball teams who compete in the WQ would increase to 60-70! Once again, that would make an already long day, even longer or worse, it could mean that the tournament would run 2 or more days.
