Each session I pull a report which shows me in black and white... (actually white, yellow and red for degrees of severity) to at least give me an indication of which teams may not be properly keeping score. This report is also a requirement to be sent to the APA national office with any teams advancing to Vegas for the World Pool Championships so it is important.
If you've played APA (or any organized pool for that matter) for any length of time, you are aware that defensive shots are an integral part of the game. So this report provides an indication of which teams are either a. not keeping score correctly because they don't know what a defensive shot is... b. are intentionally not marking defensive shots in an effort to control skill levels by not keeping score correctly..or c. are just being lazy. Either way that's no bueno!
So this is my session reminder that keeping proper score is important. I do look closely at these things especially when reviewing skill levels and will often adjust skill levels accordingly when using this report in conjunction with performance records, etc..
In addition, it is good practice to alert the scorekeeper when you play a defensive shot to ensure it is marked.
So since I'm sure there are a few teams that could use it as well as some newer player who may have never seen it, I'll take this opportunity to once again provide a tutorial on defensive shots: how to identify and correctly mark them.
Happy Halloween... be safe out there!
